About Etna

The most impressive of Europe’s active volcanoes (3350 m), its mighty presence fascinates and reigns over the entire province of Catania. Catanians’ love for Etna is interwoven with fear – they are proud of their magnificent fiery mountain, but at the same time they are conscious of its destructive potential. Nonetheless, not one of them would be glad to see its activity come to an end.
There is a common feeling of doom deep-rooted in faith, superstition, myth and legend. Today, however, constant monitoring of the mountain enables researchers to forecast all kinds of volcanic activity in its many manifestations. Scientists have also developed various means of changing the course of magma flow.
